Hey Sandy and Nora,
Loved the episode. Similarly, my friends had a deep dive into this issue in a roundtable discussion yesterday. We agreed with a lot of what you two covered but there was one real dystopian scenario that did come up that we couldn’t reconcile. We took the premise that defunding the police would free up massive resources to invest in communities that have been left behind in our society. Boosting funding for transit, education, health care and economic resources would probably decrease much of the need for police as a crime prevention body. Still, one thorn in the case for defunding the police related to organized crime moving into the vacuum of force and basically setting up armed fiefdoms. We couldn’t really figure out how to prevent that without some counter threat of force. Thoughts?
This was the best podcast I have ever heard. My experiences and observations about police since the 1960’s are vindicated by what you two women discussed, so eloquently and convincingly. I also learned about more recent crimes that I would probably have rather remained ignorant of, but that I *should* be aware of. Thank you very much indeed.
